Photos of the Year: My Favorites from the past 12 months.

2014 turned out to be a good year for me. Not only have I shot more Getty Images assignments, more newspaper assignments, but I’ve also had the privilege to photograph many sporting and news events, a wedding, and a few portraits.

On top of that, I also went out of my way to practice more landscape photography shooting at night, using ND filters to get 4 minute exposures in daylight, and getting out of my comfort zone hiking into remote places.

These are my favorites from the year. There are more on my site in the gallery 2014 Year in Photos – My Favorites from the Year to view more exciting images from the year 2014.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Carefree

Being avid outdoorsmen, living in the Pacific Northwest has a distinct advantage: It’s not a far drive to either the ocean nor the mountains. You practically live in the outdoors.

This week’s Weekly Photo Challenge is Carefree. Living up here promotes a carefree lifestyle and encourages one to visit the Great Outdoors.

On weekends and even during the week when neither has work to do, my wife Heidi and I like to drive around and enjoy the area. We are both from Colorado. She’s from Colorado Springs, and I from Aspen. I worked at The Aspen Times for over 7 years as their Chief Photographer. After living in Colorado for many years being and avid camper, hiker, backpacker, biker, snowboarder, and Jeeper, we needed someplace in the great outdoors.

Joy at Sunset:

Before meeting my wife, I moved out here after the newspaper industry began taking the big economic hit in Jan. 2009. I pulled roots from the great little town which I have great friends, some of those I almost consider family.  Heidi moved out here after we met in 2010.

Setting Sun Ignites Windows and Snow Capped Peaks

Happy Easter Everyone!!

I don’t have a photo of a bunny or easter eggs, but here’s a really recent shot of the Twin Sisters over Bellingham, Wash., during sunset as the light reflects off windows in town and bathes the snow-capped peaks of the Northern Cascade Mountains.

You neve know what you’re going to get when you go out to shoot sunset, but you should always be prepared.
© Paul Conrad/Pablo Conrad Photography - The setting Sun glints off windows and street signs in Bellingham, Wash., as it bathes the snow capped peaks of The Twin Sisters of the Cascade Mountain range in its last rays.

It was one of the first clear days we’ve had here in the Pacific Northwest in awhile. So I head out west of Bellingham, Wash., to Lummi Shore Drive to attempt to capture the alpenglow on Mt. Baker.

But as the sun began to set, the clouds rolled in and obscured Mt. Baker. During the sunset, the clouds west parted enough to let the light shine upon the Twin Sisters Peaks east of Bellingham.

While doing so, there was enough of a gap in the clouds to let the sunlight through to Bellingham. The sun reflected off the windows of homes and businesses, as well as stop signs on the streets.

I did not expect this photo. But it is quite the pleasant surprise.
